Which One are You? A WANT coach OR a COMMITTED coach?

In my College Coach Now program I use this three step approach to get my coaches started; Decision, Commitment, and Action.goals1.jpg

I want to make a clear distinction here. There is a world of difference between WANTING to be a college coach and COMMITTING to be a college coach!

Description of the WANT coach–”Coaching in college would be cool. Those guys are on TV alot and the recruiting and travel is appealing to me. But then I do have my degree and could also get a job in banking. Either would be OK. I’ve been trained to be in banking, but I don’t have a clue how to get a job in college basketball. I like basketball and played a little in high school, so I could be happy doing either. I think I’ll probably go to work for my dad in a few years anyway.”

Description of the COMMITTMENT coach–”After working hard to meet 11 NCAA head and assistant coaches, I have a better feel for what it is going to take to get a college job. Every one of those 11 guys started in jobs as managers, washing uniforms, working part time jobs as they were coaching too. I guess I have to be ready and willing to take ANY job I can just to get my foot in the door. They all told me to get a MENTOR to help me through this process and I agree. This is going to be hard. What encourages me is that those coaches I met were in the same spot I am. If they can do it then I feel like I can too. Now I need to set my goals, meet more coaches, and keeping in touch with those I do know. I can’t do this by myself so I’ll have to get to know a lot of coaches and expand my network as much as possible. I want this more than anything and I’m committed to doing whatever it takes to get that job.”

If you are the Want coach, you can save some time by clicking off this site. You’ll be wasting time, money and effort.

If you are the COMMITTED coach, get ready to be disappointed, frustrated and worn out. Those things are good signs because they signal the fact that you are getting closer and closer to your goal. Hang in there, work with your mentor, and go after it!
